Happy New Year! Wow, the holiday season went by quickly. It feels so great to be back. I have been creating fresh, new, and delicious recipes this year and am excited to share them with you! Starting out with one of my favorite taco recipes: Crispy Baked Fish Tacos!

Today, I am sharing these Crispy Baked Fish Tacos with a creamy chipotle sauce, which are absolutely perfect. The flavors and textures of this dish will make your mouth water: the crispiness of the fish, the crunch of the cabbage slaw, and the creaminess and smokiness of the sauce all pair so well together that you will want to make them again and again. This recipe comes together rather quickly, making it the perfect dinner for any night of the week.

Why I Love Crispy Baked Fish Tacos

Crispy Baked Fish Tacos are one of my favorite go-to meals when I want something fresh, healthy, and quick! They come together in minutes by breading the fish in a panko breading and then baking them in the oven for 10 minutes. I absolutely love the flavors in these tacos. They are so crunchy, creamy, and fresh all at the same time, making them craveable and just absolutely delicious. These tacos can be paired with any of your favorite taco toppings. My favorite toppings are pico de Gallo, chopped cilantro, and freshly squeezed lime juice.

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Cod fillets
  • Eggs
  • Panko – can use regular, but Panko gives you a better crunch.
  • Chili powder
  • Cumin
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Paprika
  • Salt
  • Avocado oil spray
  • Mayonnaise- can use Greek yogurt for a higher protein option
  • Chipotle pepper in adobo sauce
  • Limes
  • Red cabbage
  • Cilantro
  • Corn tortillas – can use flour
  • Optional: pico de Gallo, cotija cheese, avocado, jalapeños

Equipment Needed

  • Breading bowls
  • Whisk
  • Cutting board & knife
  • Baking sheet
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups & spoons

How To Make Crispy Baked Fish Tacos

Step by Step Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
  2. To make the cabbage slaw, Toss the bag of red cabbage with fresh lime juice and salt in a bowl. Set aside until you’re ready to assemble your fish tacos.
  3. To make the creamy chipotle sauce, blend the mayonnaise, chipotle pepper, adobo sauce, lime juice, and salt together using a blender or an immersion blender. Set aside until you’re ready to assemble the fish tacos.
  4. To make the Crispy Baked Fish, cut the fish into 1″ thick strips and set aside. Whisk the eggs in a shallow bowl and set aside. Mix the Panko, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and salt in a separate bowl. Now, bread each fish “stick” by dipping the fish into the egg mixture, letting the excess fall off, and then dredging it directly into the panko mixture. Place each fish “stick” onto a parchment-lined baking sheet on a single layer. Spray with avocado oil and bake for 10-15 minutes or until the fish reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees.
  5. Charring the tortillas: this step is optional but highly recommended! Place one tortilla at a time over an open flame for about 15 seconds, flipping halfway through.
  6. Assemble the tacos: Place the crispy baked fish on a tortilla and top with cabbage slaw, creamy chipotle sauce, and your favorite toppings!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get your fish crispy in the oven?

The breadcrumbs make a huge difference, so I use Panko in this recipe. Panko has a much crunchier texture than regular breadcrumbs. Also, baking the fish at a higher temperature helps crisp up the breading on the fish.

Which fish is best for tacos?

For these crispy baked fish tacos, flaky white fish is best, so I recommend cod, halibut, or haddock.

Are fish tacos better with corn or flour tortillas?

This one is a matter of preference. The fish tacos work on both types of tortillas, and both options are great!

Crispy Baked Fish Tacos

Try these mouthwatering Crispy Baked Fish Tacos with creamy chipotle sauce- the perfect blend of flavors and textures.
Servings 4 people

Ingredients

Crispy Baked Fish:

  • 4 Cod fillets Cut into 1" strips
  • 2 Eggs whisked
  • 1 cup Panko
  • 1 Tbsp Chili powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • Avocado oil spray

Creamy Chipotle Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 Chipotle pepper in adobo sauce
  • 1 tsp Adobo sauce
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 Lime freshly squeezed

Quick Cabbage Slaw:

  • 1 bag Red cabbage
  • 1 Lime freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 tsp Salt

Tacos:

  • Cilantro
  • Corn tortillas - can use flour
  • Optional: pico de gallo, cotija cheese, avocado, jalapeños

Instructions
